Endometriosis is diagnosed through a combination of a gynaecologist’s assessment, medical imaging, and, in some cases, a surgical procedure.

A gynaecologist will begin with a thorough physical examination and a detailed discussion of your symptoms, including a “period pain journal” if you have one. They may then use medical imaging, such as a transvaginal ultrasound or MRI, to look for signs of the disease. However, the only definitive way to diagnose endometriosis is through a minimally invasive surgical procedure called a laparoscopy, where a surgeon can visually confirm and often remove the growths.

In India, there’s a long diagnostic delay, and endometriosis goes undiagnosed for 8 to 11 years. Hence, it’s crucial for women to advocate for themselves and see a gynaecologist if they spot early symptoms of endometriosis.
