Signs of an unhealthy period vary by age, but generally include cycles that are consistently shorter than 21 days, longer than 35 days, or pain so severe that it stops you from performing daily tasks.

Teens and Early 20s (The Adjustment Years)

  • Extreme Period Pain (Dysmenorrhea): It makes you cancel school, work, or social plans every month because of the pain.
  • Cycles that never stabilise: If periods are still unpredictable 3 years after your first one.
  • Missing Periods: Skipping periods for more than 3 months (Amenorrhea) without being pregnant.

Mid-20s to Late 30s (The Peak Years)

  • Sudden Changes: A cycle that was always 28 days suddenly becoming 21 or 40 days.
  • Heavy Bleeding: Needing to change a pad or tampon every 1–2 hours, or passing clots larger than a 2-rupee coin.
  • Spotting: Bleeding or brown discharge between your actual period dates.

40s and Above (The Transition Years)

As you approach perimenopause, changes are expected, but these are NOT healthy:

  • Flooding: Extremely heavy periods that cause anemia or exhaustion.
  • Post-Initimacy Bleeding: Bleeding specifically after intimacy.
  • Very Frequent Periods: Having a period twice in one month consistently.
Informational graphic titled ‘What Are Age Signs of Unhealthy Periods’ and menstrual health symptoms. The text explains that unhealthy period signs, irregular menstrual cycles, and abnormal periods vary by age but generally include menstrual cycles shorter than 21 days, menstrual cycles longer than 35 days, or severe period pain so intense it interferes with daily activities. It notes that during the teens and early 20s, extreme menstrual pain, period cramps, and irregular periods are common menstrual health warning signs. In the late 20s and 30s, sudden changes in menstrual cycle patterns and heavy menstrual flow are key period health signs to watch for. After the 40s, the main indicators of unhealthy periods, hormonal changes, and perimenopause symptoms include very heavy bleeding and frequent periods
