If your periods are getting more painful in your 40s, you are likely experiencing Perimenopause (the transition towards menopause) or suffering from Uterine Fibroids (non-cancerous growths). Though distinct, both conditions significantly intensify period cramps and make cycles harder to manage.
Perimenopause usually begins in your mid-40s, and on average, perimenopause lasts about 4 years, but for some, it can last only a few months or stretch up to 10 years.
How Perimenopause Causes More Painful Periods
- In your younger years, your ovaries typically release an egg every month. However, as you enter your 40s, hormonal shifts cause your ovaries to stop ovulating regularly i.e. they release an egg, but not every month.
- Without release of an egg, instead of shedding, the uterine lining keeps growing and thickening during months when the egg isn’t released.
- A thicker uterine lining requires more amount of Prostaglandins (the villain chemicals that cause period pain) to throw the lining out.
- High prostaglandin levels force the uterus to contract more violently, causing the heavy, intense pain and very heavy periods in your 40s.
How Uterine Fibroids Cause More Painful Periods
Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop from the muscle tissue of the uterus. Statistics show that approximately 64% of women affected by uterine fibroids are between the ages of 36 and 50. Therefore, a sudden onset of period pain in your 40s is often linked to these uterine fibroids growths.
