Yes. Painful periods can cause sharp, stabbing, or even tearing pain during bowel movements. This specific type of pain is usually a classic symptom of bowel endometriosis. It is important to remember that such intense pain is not normal and is very different from period poops—the common discomfort, constipation, or diarrhea that many girls experience during their cycle.

What is Bowel Endometriosis?

You may already know that endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus. This misplaced tissue is often found on the ovaries or fallopian tubes, but the bowels are also part of the pelvic cavity.

When this tissue attaches itself to the bowels, it is called bowel endometriosis. Because this tissue behaves like the lining inside your uterus, it swells and bleeds during your period. This creates that sharp, stabbing, or tearing sensation during bowel movements. This type of pain is a classic sign of secondary dysmenorrhea—which is period pain caused by an underlying gynecological condition.

On the other hand, period poops or general bowel discomfort happens because of the villain pain chemicals called prostaglandins. When these chemicals enter the bloodstream and reach the intestines, they cause the bowels to squeeze. This is a classic sign of primary dysmenorrhea—regular period pain caused by a chemical imbalance.

A text-based informational graphic with the heading “Can Painful Periods Cause Pain While Bowel Movement?” in bold at the top. Below the heading, the text explains that painful periods can lead to sharp, stabbing, or tearing pain during bowel movements. It notes that this type of pain may be a classic symptom of bowel endometriosis. The final section emphasizes that such intense pain is not normal and is different from typical “period poops,” which may involve mild discomfort, constipation, or diarrhea during menstruation. The overall tone is educational and aims to raise awareness about abnormal menstrual pain symptoms. The graphic portraits the campaign message "STOP The Period Pain."
